Vandalia Concrete, Mostly Mid-Century

Vandalia's housing came in a rush after World War II, so a typical call to concrete contractors in Vandalia is about a driveway or patio that has served for 50 to 65 years. The town had only 927 residents in 1950. By 1960 it had 6,342 and by 1970 10,796. It reached 15,209 in 2020, with 7,091 housing units and a low 4.0 percent vacancy rate. Most of those homes went up within a few decades of each other, and their concrete is aging together.

Crossroads history

Benjamin Wilhelm settled near today's U.S. 40 and U.S. 25-A on August 17, 1838, and the village was incorporated on February 7, 1848, with Wilhelm as its first mayor. It became a charter city on January 2, 1960. Vandalia earned the name "Crossroads of America" from the National Road and the Dixie Highway, later replaced by Interstates 70 and 75, which still cross at the edge of town. Dayton International Airport sits just to the north; the Amateur Trapshooting Association was based here until airport expansion pushed it to Illinois in 2005.

What mid-century concrete looks like now

Concrete placed in the 1950s and 1960s was often thinner and less consistent than today's, and air entrainment was not yet standard everywhere. On Vandalia driveways from that era we commonly find:

  • surface scaling and popouts after decades of salt
  • a sunken panel in front of the garage where the base washed out
  • cracks radiating from a corner or a downspout
  • a narrow single-car width that no longer fits the household

When most of those problems show up together, replacement is usually the smarter spend. We remove the old slab, rebuild and compact the base, and pour a new driveway with an air-entrained mix and properly spaced joints.

Garages and workshops

Many Vandalia homes have detached garages or have added one over the years. A garage floor carries more weight than a patio and needs a thicker slab, a slope toward the door and a clean edge where it meets the apron. If you are replacing a garage at the same time, we can pour the floor with a thickened perimeter to support the walls, coordinated with your builder.

Flat land, careful drainage

Vandalia sits at about 955 feet on fairly level ground. Level lots are easy to work on but need deliberate grading, because there is little natural fall to move water off a slab. We set a minimum pitch away from the house on every patio and make sure driveways send water to the street rather than toward the garage door.

Vandalia Questions

My Vandalia driveway is from the 1960s. Should I replace it?

If it shows scaling, several cracked panels and a sunken section by the garage, a full replacement with a new base is usually worth it. If damage is limited to one or two panels, section replacement may be enough.

Can you widen a single-car driveway?

Yes, where the lot and city rules allow. We lay out the widening and check any limits on width at the street before we pour.

Do you pour detached garage floors?

Yes, including thickened edges for new garage walls, sloped to drain out the door.
