Miamisburg Concrete, River Town to Suburb
Miamisburg has been around since the 1790s, and as concrete contractors in Miamisburg we see everything from century-old porches near the river to driveways in neighborhoods built in the past 30 years. The town began as Hole's Station in 1797, with a stockade on the west bank of the Great Miami River. It incorporated as a village in 1832 and became a city in the 1920s. The 2020 census counted 19,923 residents and 8,598 housing units.
What the river did
The Great Dayton Flood of 1913 destroyed much of the city, according to Wikipedia. Rebuilding after it, and the flood control system built across the valley afterward, shaped the older part of town. Homes near the river and the downtown area often sit on lower ground, and their walks and steps have dealt with more water than those up the hill. We look at where water goes before we design any slab here, and on low lots we sometimes raise grade slightly or add drainage before we pour.
Growth with the Mound plant
In 1947 the Atomic Energy Commission built Mound Laboratory on a 306-acre site in Miamisburg, operated by Monsanto. It employed more than 2,000 people at its peak before production ended in the 1990s. The plant helped drive the city's growth: 6,329 people in 1950 and 14,797 in 1970. Many of the ranch and split-level homes from those decades still have their original concrete, now 50 to 75 years old, and their driveways and patios are a large part of our work here.
The city is also home to the Miamisburg Mound, one of the largest conical burial mounds in the eastern United States, likely built by the Adena culture.
Hills and grade
Miamisburg sits around 830 feet, but the land rises noticeably away from the river. Sloped lots mean steeper driveways and patios that need steps or a retaining edge. A steep driveway needs a broom finish with good texture for traction in winter, and its joints have to be placed so the slab does not creep downhill. For patios on a slope, we often step the slab or build up one side with compacted stone and a thickened edge.
Common projects
- Original 1950s to 1970s driveways replaced with a new base and slab
- Back patios, plain or stamped, with steps down from the door
- Walks and steps on older homes near downtown
- Garage floors and shed pads
- Section replacement on newer driveways with isolated damage
Any work in the street right-of-way goes through the city, and we confirm the requirements before we schedule.

Miamisburg Questions
My driveway in Miamisburg is steep. What finish should it have?
A coarser broom finish across the slope gives better traction in winter. We also place joints so the slab does not creep downhill.
Can you build a patio on a sloped yard?
Yes. We step the patio or build up the low side with compacted stone and a thickened edge, then add steps where needed.
Is my 1960s driveway worth repairing?
Sometimes. If most panels are level and the damage is isolated, section replacement works. If the base has failed, a full replacement lasts longer.
